Are you ok to be different?
I walked by this flower patch the other day and it immediately reminded me of something.
Something Alex said to me.
Let me back up a bit…
In January, Greg and I had the pleasure of flying out to Utah to attend family workshop with Alex at Legacy Outdoor Adventures. They like to have families do this before the client graduates to the next step.
One of our assignments before we arrived was to do the 4 Rs.
Greg, Alex and myself were to write out 4 things we regretted regarding our relationship, 4 resentments we had against each other, 4 respects for the other and 4 requests we had for the other.
This was a super tough assignment for all of us, but we knew it would be so helpful.
And we were not wrong.
This assignment sparked some really powerful conversations, tears, laughter and some anger at points but we all got amazing things out of it.
It was like a damn broke.
Especially with Greg and Alex’s relationship, which had been strained for a long time.
Anyway, back to the flowerbed and what it reminded me of.
One of Alex’s respects for me was,
”I respect how you are willing to be yourself, especially when that makes you different.”
When he said that my eyes immediately watered and I gave him a big hug.
Wow, he noticed!
He noticed that…
I try to be myself.
And, that I am perfectly happy being different.
This is so important to me because he has struggled so much these past 5 years.
He struggled with letting himself be who he is.
He struggled with not wanting to be different.
He believed being ‘him’ was ‘wrong’.
He believed that different was ‘bad’.
I am very happy to report that he is doing REALLY well.
He is in aftercare, is very dedicated to his sobriety and is well on his way to letting himself be who he is.
He recognizes that it is absolutely perfect for him to be different and embraces it.
He is able to apply what he respected about me to himself and his life.
He is able to thrive.
And, this mama is VERY proud of him and so happy to keep supporting him in his journey.
