“Be brave enough to suck at something new.”

That was on a cup, in a yoga studio, this past Tuesday morning when I was trying something new.
(The universe does speak to you if you open up to listening to it!!)

Let’s take a step back first.

In May, I set a goal of doing at least 15 minutes of stretching/yoga at least three times a week. I knew that my body (and mind) would greatly benefit from adding that practice to my week.

Well, the “problem” is that I don’t really like yoga all that much, and stretching seems like a chore.

But, I recognize that we can do things that we really don’t like doing or at least don’t get super excited about. The “trick” is to open your mind to different ways to do things. If I didn’t like what I had done before, there was no reason to keep doing it that way. I can experiment with different things.

So, that’s what I’ve been doing.

  • I’ve found different apps and youtube channels and have tried various different routines.

  • I’ve researched my local gym and yoga studios to see what classes they have to offer.

  • I’ve signed up for different things to give it a try.

  • I did a 90-minute yin yoga class set to live music and chanting.
    (Uh, this was amazing!!)

  • I did a 60-minute meditation class set to live singing bowls and reiki healing.
(Ok, not yoga or stretching, but VERY relaxing for the body, mind, and spirit.)

  • I did a couple of 60-minute restorative yoga classes.
(extremely lovely, but my mind did tend to wander to the things I still “had” to do that day.)

And, that brings us to the something new that I tried on Tuesday that I was 100% willing to suck at. (It would be tough to suck at the things I listed above…lol.)

And, that would be aerial yoga.

It is something that I thought looked really cool but never made the time for.
But, because of my quest to find something yogaish that I really like, I decided it was time to give it a go.

Well, I was pretty nervous.
I didn't know if I would like it or hate it.
I didn't know if I could even do any of the moves.
I didn't know if everyone else in the class would be pros...while I was a newbie and totally clueless.

And, I am not the most graceful person in the world, and I am pretty fucking clumsy.

But, I said, “Fuck it! I will try it, and if I suck, I suck! I never have to do it again if that’s the case.”

Well, let me tell you!

I had SO much fun!!
It was challenging.
There were some things I couldn’t do that the others could (different moves while in the inversions that I just wasn’t ready for!).
But, there were also some things I could do that the others could not (like planking with both feet being held up in the silk and doing pike planks).

I didn't "suck"...
I wasn't the most limber person in the class.
I wasn’t the most graceful person in the class.

But I did not care!
I was really into learning something new!

I found something that I really enjoyed and cannot wait to do again!

And, I met some really cool ladies!!

All because I was willing to suck!

So, I suggest you grab a piece of paper and a pen and make a list of things you’d like to try or have been “meaning” to try but haven’t yet because you are afraid you will suck at it.

When you look at your list, what are you thinking and feeling?
Are you thinking, “There’s no way I can do these things” or “I don’t want to fail”?
Are you scared, nervous, or intimidated?

IT’S OK!!!

Those are all perfectly normal thoughts and feelings when thinking about trying something new!

That doesn’t have to stop you!

Think about all the times you’ve tried something new…driving your car, a new job, a new workout…hell, diapering a wiggling baby (that shit is hard! LOL!)!

You’ve been trying new things all of your life; some you’ve sucked at, some you were mildly bad at, some you were good at, and some you were great at.

And, no matter what the outcome…you tried.

Can you try those things on your list? One a day, one a week, one a month…hell, one a year?

I think you can….and whether you suck or not, you’ll have learned something from it.

Ohh, the next thing on my list to try is surfing! I’ve always wanted to try it but never made time for it…and was too nervous to suck at it. Not anymore!! I’m sure that’ll be a GREAT story!! 🤙
