Christmas Travels..

So, Greg and I flew out here to CO on the 24th and had quite the experience.  The extreme weather that is across the country certainly threw some obstacles our way!  We were able to make it out of Newark…in fact, we were surprised at how smoothly that went!  Because…well..it's Newark! LOL!  We were expecting a lot of turbulence, but the ride was as smooth as glass, with no drama of any kind.

But when we landed…it got tricky.  We landed in Denver right on time; however, they didn’t have a gate for us to go into because so many flights had been canceled. Therefore, they  had more planes there than usual.  We were told a couple of times that in 30 minutes, a gate would open up, but when those 30 minutes were up, we’d basically been told the same thing.  Three hours later, we finally got to a gate and were able to get off the plane.  Surprisingly, people kept their cool on the plane.  People were super concerned about their connecting flights, but no one got nasty.  Greg and I pretty much sat there…him watching a movie and me playing solitaire (I didn’t download enough movies!).

We kind of meandered our way to baggage claim because we knew it would take some time for the bags to come off.  Well….an hour went by, then another 30 minutes…the entire plane’s bags seemed to have disappeared into a black hole in the tarmac!  Finally, after waiting there for 2 hours, an announcement was made that our bags had been dumped in a big pile and it could be another 2 hours before we got them.  Greg and I looked at each other, kind of stunned! We contemplated what to do. Do we get some food?  Do we take a walk?  Do we cancel our dinner reservations?  All the while, I’m texting Alex and Nick and telling them that we probably won’t make it for dinner.

But Greg and I were hesitant to actually leave the baggage claim because the lack of communication had been quite astounding.

I kid you not….10 minutes after the employee said it could take another 2 hours, the belt came on, and our bags tumbled out!  🧐  You can’t make this shit up!  We were so happy that we hadn’t left…like quite a few other people.

So, we finally got into our hotel at 6:15, changed our clothes, and ran out the door to meet the boys for dinner.  It was a long day!

I’m not writing this blog to bitch and moan about all of this. I am writing to tell you that even though our day did not go as planned, it wasn’t a bad day.  We rolled with the punches!

Now, since I know how to manage my mind (most of the time….I am human, after all! LOL!)I kept telling myself that everything was fine.  We made it to Colorado safely, it was Christmas time, and we would see our sons in a few hours.  No big deal.

I was EXTREMELY surprised by my husband!!  In the past, he would have been downright cranky, moody, and complaining the whole time!  He would have been trying to pick a fight with me since he couldn’t control what was going on around him.  He wasn’t doing that AT ALL!  I kept looking at him out of the corner of my eye…like…who are you, and what did you do with my husband.  LOL!

After waiting for our luggage for about an hour, I looked at him and I asked him what he was thinking about because he had been kind of quiet.  He said that he had watched a movie on the plane about World War II, and that movie had put all of this into perspective.  He said that there was no reason to get upset about all of this at all.

I have to say that I am very proud of him!

I also have to say that I 100% know that the fact that I wasn’t freaking out tremendously helped both of us.  I know in the past, I would not have handled it well.  I would have been very pissed off and started hitting the booze and fighting with him.  It would have been a pretty horrible day for both of us.

My whole attitude around circumstances like that has changed so much, and I believe it has rubbed off on him as well.  Since I am not so reactive, he is not so reactive.  It’s a beautiful thing, and our relationship has improved so much because I learned these skills.

I can teach you these skills so you too can change your attitude around circumstances like this.  I can teach you how not to be so reactive.  I can show you how much better your life can be!  I can teach you how to be unapologetically YOU!!
