Coach with Steph

Every day can be a special occasion….

I had an appointment at the dentist today and wanted to share a conversation that I had with the hygienist. (Before she started cleaning my teeth! LOL!)

I hung my purse on a hook, and she admired it. It’s not an expensive purse, but I like it. It is from Sakroots and is super cute because it has elephants on it, and part of the proceeds go toward saving elephants, and it’s made from recyclable materials.

That’s not the critical part of the conversation, but I wanted to start with the beginning.

Anyway, she starts telling me about a Coach wallet that someone had given her as a graduation gift a few years ago. She had put it aside for special occasions but soon forgot all about it. She found it in her closet the other day, and it was all dusty and dirty, and she felt terrible that she had never used it. She dusted it off and put it in a drawer where she had a few expensive bags that she had been gifted that she had never used because she was waiting for a special occasion.

Come to find out, she has had some of those bags for years and has never used them because there had been no special occasions.

In response to that, I said,
The fact that I am sitting in this dentist’s chair is a special occasion.
The fact that I went to the grocery store this morning is a special occasion.
The fact that I woke up today is a special occasion!!!
One significant thing that I learned from the pandemic and the shutdown is to treat every day like it is a special occasion! Because it is!

She looked at me for a minute and then said that she liked that. That she’d like to think that way. I told her she could start right now if she wanted to!!

When I got home, I Googled the definition of a “special occasion.”

The definition of a special occasion is an important day or event, which includes..holidays, anniversaries, baby showers, graduations, bridal showers, weddings….and many more.

These are great; they’re fun days! But who gets to decide that these are the special days and others are not?

Why is it not the norm to think that every day is a special day?

Why is it not the norm to wear our most excellent shoes on a “normal” Monday or use our “nicest” bag on a “normal” Saturday?

For as long as I can remember, these have been the “rules.” This is what we’ve been taught. The calendar or invitations tell us which days are special…and all the others are not.

I challenge this!! And I want you to challenge it too!!!

I am choosing not to believe that anymore!  I am choosing not to wait for the calendar or invitations!  I am choosing to believe that every day is special!

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying that every day is going to go exactly how I want it to; or that there aren’t going to be challenges and unforeseen events.  I get to decide what to think about those things when they occur.  Not a calendar or social norms! My point is that I am choosing right now to think every day is special…and not “just another day.”

If you woke up every day thinking, “this day is special,” how would you feel?  How would you act?   What would you do differently?  What kind of day would you have? How would your life improve?
