My brain vs gentle yoga…
I took a gentle yoga class this morning, and boy, my brain just wasn’t having it! LOL.
I signed up for the class because while on a retreat in Italy, I decided I would like to be very intentional about doing daily yoga, practicing mindfulness, and stopping and connecting with myself more.
I want to slow down and nurture myself more.
Hence the gentle yoga class.
Well, this class was basically 45 minutes of Shavasana in 3 different shapes.
After about 10 minutes in the first shape, my brain started chattering away.
“This is stupid. I’m wasting my time. I should get up and leave. I have too much to do.”
Chatter, chatter, chatter….cheep, cheep, cheep. (That’s a song from the Music Man..lol)
I started judging myself for having these thoughts.
I started telling myself to knock it off, just breathe, and enjoy the process.
I tried to force myself to stop thinking.
You know what?
It didn’t take.
(Big shocker, I know.)
My brain kept it up; all the while, I was convinced this was all for naught.
I was convinced I had wasted 45 minutes of my day.
Until I stood up.
I had gone in there with an extremely sore and tight lower back.
But when I stood up, it felt 100x better!
What???
How did that happen?
Well, clearly, I benefitted from the class more than I thought I had.
My body got some release even though my brain didn’t!
Without even realizing it, I was benefitting the whole time.
Isn’t that interesting?
Our brains don’t always have to be “on board” to get what we need.
Before life coaching, I wouldn’t have recognized that I got something out of that class.
When it was over, I probably would’ve gathered my stuff while grumbling to myself how much of a waste of time that was.
I probably would’ve texted my husband and told him the class sucked.
I know I wouldn’t have considered doing it again!
I recognized I felt better because I am more in tune with my body and brain.
And, surprise…
I’m going to sign up for Sunday’s gentle yoga class because I know that even if my brain chatters a bit, my body will benefit from it.
I am the Get Real Coach for women. What you see is what you get.
This is my suggestion to you.
When you are doing something and your mind is negatively chattering away…
Stop for a moment, tune into yourself, and see if you are actually benefitting from what you are doing.
You may realize you are, and that could change your whole experience.
And, if you realize you aren’t, you get to decide if you want to keep doing it or not.
It’s all about being tuned in and aware.
